Be Renewed in the Spirit of Your Mind

Lord’s
Day morning
Ephesians 4:23
Scripture and Theme: Please open your Bible to Ephesians 4:17-24.
Once I was driving up the side of Paris Mountain in Greenville, South Carolina. I’m from Chicago, and if you haven’t noticed, we don’t have many mountains around here! I was trying to make an important meeting, and the houses were not very well marked. I finally found the house. I couldn’t see a driveway, so I thought I’d just drive right up into their yard. I was proceeding just fine until I felt the bottom of my car SLAM against the two foot drainage ditch that was camouflaged by an equal amount of high grass!
Ever since then, I’ve tried to be very careful how and where I drive my car!! And actually my car was never quite the same after that. Wrong pathways have bad consequences.
You see this morning we are all guiding the vehicle of our life. Every decision you make, every thought you think is taking you somewhere! We need to wake up! We need to pay attention! Your steps are taking you somewhere![1] Your only hope is to have the MIND of Christ guiding you on a daily basis. Paul talks about this very thing in Ephesians 4, where he calls it: being “renewed in the spirit of your mind”.
What ever is in your mind will come out of your life. If we have the mind of Christ, we will have a life of Christlikeness! Now this is something that we are called to put all our effort into! It is something will use up every ounce of energy and will take the rest of your life. In other words, being a genuine Christian is HARD WORK!! All of your energy and focus should be put what our text calls “renewing your mind” to be like Jesus Christ.
So this morning we are going to look at: “The Hard Work of Sanctification”. Renewing our mind daily is tough stuff. This morning we are looking at how to do that in Ephesians 4.
As we look at Ephesians 4:17-24 let us stand as we honor Jesus Christ, the giver of this truth this morning. The resurrected Lord stands here among us as we read His precious Word. What a privilege!
“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
[Prayer for guidance]
Introduction: Aren’t you glad you are a Christian? You’ve been radically changed and transformed! You are not what you once were, and you never will be again! That’s what Paul is saying in these verses. Paul says, in verse 21—you’ve been taught by Jesus. You’ve been born again. Your heart has been transformed. You’ve put off the old way you used to live, and you have put on the new way of living. There’s been this awesome change. Your family and friends think you’ve gone off the deep end! I mean you’ve actually repented of your life and put your faith in Christ!
That’s great! But you and I both know you’re not where you need to be yet. What happens after that change? What happens after you come to know Christ? You start on a journey called “sanctification”. It is journey to be as holy as God is holy. You want to be conformed in “the image” of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). And the KEY to staying on that journey toward Christlikeness is FOUND in verse 23. God calls us all to “be renewed in the spirit of your mind” (verse 23). Paul says the same thing in Romans 12:2. He says: “Be ye transformed [INTO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST] by the renewing of your mind”.
Now your mind is also called your heart, your inner man, your spirit, your soul. It is not simply the intellectual part of you as we think of in our Western culture. It means your “being”, the seat of who you are. As Paul says in Ephesians 3:16, “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man”. We are called to renew our inward man day by day in 2 Corinthians 4:16.
If we can get learn how to “renew our mind” we will have the secret to killing sinful habits in your life!
Now let’s get very specific.
I. What exactly does it Mean to “be renewed in the spirit of your mind” (verse 23)? It is the ongoing work of the Spirit of God in your heart, changing you to be like Jesus.
It is to constantly be under the control of the mind of Christ.
A. Being “renewed in the spirit of your mind” Means exactly what it says: to make new again and again. It is a return to and a rekindling of a previous condition of newness. This tells us that in the Christian life, there are constant distractions and possible departures from the condition of holiness and Christlikeness, and we need to constantly be brought back to that condition.
The Puritans called it “Practicing the Presence of God”. We are constantly to come back to the awareness of God’s holy, awesome, loving presence. You notice I say you must ‘constantly’ renew your mind.
1. That is because the phrase “be renewed” is in the continual tense, and so it means to “constantly be renewing your mind”. We are to daily have a clean and pure heart and mind.
Illustration: Every so often, when my computer is slowing to a halt, I wipe my computer hard drive clean and set it back to factory settings. All the extra junk that’s on there is taken off, and the computer runs like new! We need to constantly renew our mind to the Christlike format God designed and purposed us for!
Illustration: When I was in college my wife to be was studying for her Nursing degree 500 miles away. Daily I would look at her picture, and the reminder of her would rekindle and renew my love for her. I would do this daily, several times a day. And let me make a confession: it never got old!!
As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:16, “though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.” We are to “take up [our] cross daily…and follow [Christ]” (Luke 9:23). Every day you are to be made more and more renewed in the image of Jesus Christ! Daily we are called to a recommitment to Christ. We are called to renew our vows to Christ.
2. Now understand that it is Christ that does the actual renewing in you. The verse says that we are to “be renewed”. If I were to tell a car to “be painted”, I would expect someone outside of the car to paint the car. The car doesn’t paint itself. So the idea here is that you cannot transform your own mind to be like Christ’s. It is a work of God. But daily we are to die to ourselves and submit to the transformation that God is ready to do in our hearts and lives.
We are to commit ourselves to Christ’s Lordship and control in everything that we do. This constant renewal of the mind is the POWER of God in your life. It is His actual Presence renewing you. It is a commitment to Christ Himself IN YOU controlling everything you do. Mind renewal is critical because whoever directs and controls our thinking is ultimately the one who will direct and control our lives. There are “just two choices on the shelf—serving God or serving self”. You are either a slave to Christ or a slave to sin. You cannot serve two masters.
And that submission is HARD WORK!! We are going to get to that.
B. Renewing your mind has NEVER meant stuffing your head with intellectual knowledge alone. You see, “knowledge puffeth up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). Becoming an egg head about God will not make you holy. It will only make your heart cold and proud. Romans 1:22 tells us that there are those who “profess themselves to be wise, and instead become fools” (paraphrase). They have “a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof” (2 Timothy 3:5). They look religious, but they have no real power from God in their lives. Yes we are to be meditating in the Bible “day and night” and cleansing our minds “with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26), but just knowing the Bible is NOT enough. You must know not just the words of God, but the God of the Word!
So let me just review. To “be renewed in the spirit of your mind” is to constantly submit to the mind of Christ in you again and again on a daily basis. It is committing yourself to walk with Christ IN YOU, to be taught of Christ IN YOU, to know Christ IN YOU, and be changed by Him continually as He works His mind IN YOU. Paul said it this way in Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Christ LIVETH IN ME!!! Christ liveth IN YOU!! Let His mind control you! “be renewed in the spirit of your mind”
There are many ways this mind renewal is expressed in the Bible, and it always refers to our experiencing Christ’s presence personally:
· “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2).
· And in Romans 12:2 we are told: “Be ye transformed [INTO CHRIST’S IMAGE] by the renewing of your mind”
· John 15 speaks of it as “abiding in Christ” (See 1 John 2:27—as the Holy Spirit teaches you, you will abide in Christ).
· “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
· “Walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16).
Ok, so we’ve seen what it means to “be renewed in the spirit of your mind” (Ephesians 4:23). It is to constantly be under the control of the mind of Christ.
II. What does the renewed mind actually LOOK LIKE? For this we need to go to a very important passage that explains it perfectly. Please turn over to Romans 12. A person with a renewed mind is very identifiable. He or she has God dwelling in them, motivating and directing and controlling their every move. In Romans 12, there are five marks of a renewed mind: surrender, self-denial, obedience, humility, and service. This is a picture of a person with the mind of Jesus Christ. The mind is constantly renewed with the Presence of Christ, and Christ Himself then directs His child into these five things.
A. The first mark is: Surrender. Romans 12:1 parallels with verse 2. Let’s look at them. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” To have a renewed mind is to surrender yourself totally to the possession of God. Does God possess you? You must present yourself completely under the control of God in total and absolute surrender. Admit to God that anything you could do outside of Him is a complete waste!
· Have you given God possession of your friendships and relationships?
· Have you given God your attitude?
· Your tongue?
· Do you exalt yourself over those you have contact with, especially those you are closest with? Do you serve or do you demand to be served? You lack humilty, grace, and a renewed mind.
B. The second mark is: Denial. This includes denial. We are to follow Jesus to the Cross. We are to die to all the values of this world. We are NOT to be “conformed to this world”. We are to be counter-cultural. We are to deny all self exaltation! This world teaches us to seek our own glory, to live for self and to exalt self.
Or as our text puts it: “Put off the old man!” In order to have a renewed mind, you must first sense the wretchedness of the old life.
Jesus said it this way in Mark 8:34, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
It a forsaking of all! The motivation to forsake is powerful. We forsake all for Christ!
Matthew 13:44, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.”
The above verse is speaking of salvation. We forsake ALL and follow Christ as our treasure. He is what we live for. Mind renewal is the same principle in your life day by day. You cannot have your mind renewed if you are not willing to forsake everything for the purity and holiness of Christ. You must put off all that displeases our Lord. Look at the things that are named by Christ in Mark 10:29-30, “There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,” Your choices may mean that you lose your house, or your relationships with family and friends are disrupted. You might even lose wealth and prosperity because of it. But look at verse 30, “But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. 31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.”
C. The third mark is: Obedience. Romans 12:2 says that we are to “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” The renewed mind constantly bears out the perfect will of God. If your mind is aflame for Christ, and Christ has possession, you are abiding in Christ, you are filled with the Spirit, then you will be fulfilling the perfect will of God. Or as Paul says it in Galatians 5:16, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
D. The fourth mark is: Humility. Verse 3 of Romans tells us what walking in the perfect will of God with a renewed mind looks like. “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
Humility is the surest test of a renewed mind. Look at Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Look at verse 5, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Look back at Romans 12. Verse 16 says “Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate.” In other words, someone with a renewed mind, with the mind of Christ, doesn’t attempt to accomplish big and glorious things that will get him the applause of men. If your mind is under the Power of Christ, you won’t do things so that people will think you’re “somebody”. Instead, associate yourself with the most humble, forgotten of this earth. Isn’t that exactly what Jesus did? It was always the “publicans and sinners”—the forgotten people of society that drew near to hear Jesus. Check it out in Luke 15:1! A person with a renewed mind is going to seek out the forgotten people!
This humility of the mind of Christ marks us with a love for all people, especially the brethren. John 13:35, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
Andrew Murray writes in his book, Absolute Surrender:
How often sharp criticism, sharp judgment, hasty opinion, unloving words, secret contempt of each other, secret condemnation of each other are found among Christians who are banded together in work! Just as a mother has tender compassion to her children’s failures, so ought we to have strong love one for another. “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” (I John 4:20).
And so obviously, that humble love leads us to the fifth mark of having the mind of Christ renewed in you.
E. That fifth mark is: Service (Loving Labor): Look back at Romans 12. Verses 4 and 5 say that we are members of one Body, and verses 6 through 8 say that we all have different gifts. But Romans 12:9-21 specifically tell us what the Mind of Christ performing “that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” IN US looks like! As you submit to the Mind of Christ and the Presence of Christ in you, you will submit to all that is given in this passage. If you are transformed by the renewing of your mind, this is exactly what you will look like. The perfect will of God will be done in you. And this is what it looks like—verse 9, “Let love be without dissimulation [HYPOCRISY]. Abhor [BE DISGUSTED WITH] that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. 14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. 17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
III. Now that we’ve seen what a renewed mind looks like, let’s look at the LABOR of a renewed mind.
Renewing your mind is the whole purpose of your life if you profess to know Christ. As Christians we are literally “Christ followers”. We walk the road our Saviour walked, but it’s not a bed of roses. It’s not an easy path. We are called to:
· “Walk circumspectly” (Ephesians 5:15).
· “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Out of it flows the fountain of your life!
· “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12).
· “Be zealous of good works” (Titus 2:14)
· to “fight the good fight” (1 Timothy 6:12)
· “Walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16)
· And “run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).
· We are called to “contend for the faith” (Jude 3)
· And to “finish the course” (2 Timothy 4:7).
· 1 Timothy 4:7, “Exercise thyself …unto godliness.”
And the only way we can complete this journey is by the POWER of the one who has promised to “keep you from falling” (Jude 24)! Only through Christ can we put away sinful habits!
1 Timothy 4:7, “Exercise thyself …unto godliness.”
Philippians 2:12-13, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
David cried to God in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
As a regenerate person you have the power to put off the old man. “Christ liveth in me”! Paul explained in great detail how men outside of Christ have no ability to please God. If you are without Christ you are dead in trespasses and sins! In the flesh you cannot please God.
But now Paul’s message is, you are now raised with Christ. You have the resurrection power in you. You have the mind of Christ in you! You have the ability! You have the life of Christ in you! You are a new creation in Christ—“old things have passed away, behold all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
I want to point out thought that if you are saved you already have all the power you need to live a holy life in the Spirit! Paul says in Ephesians 3:16, “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man”. The power for this exercise in holiness is not in your flesh, but comes by yielding yourself to the power of the Spirit and then obeying Christ diligently!!
So this hard work of sanctification is not something you do in the flesh, but you use all the power you have in your new life! You can die to all your sinful habits “through the Spirit.” “If ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live” (Romans 8:13). The key to the labor of the new life is the three word phrase, “through the Spirit”. You must live every moment under the power of the Holy Spirit. It is labor that every action would be the result of a mind flooded with the power of the Holy Spirit.
1. I want you to see this in the life of Paul. He says in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5, “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” From the human side there was feebleness; from the divine side there was divine omnipotence. And that is true of every godly life.
To have a renewed mind, is to have a mind completely possessed by the Holy Ghost’s power and absolute control. Are you a vessel of God’s Spirit?
Jesus himself says to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” And what is Paul’s response? “Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
2. I want you to see this in the life of Jesus. John 3:34 says that Jesus had the “Spirit of God” without measure. Yet look at how weak He was in His flesh in the Garden of Gethsemane, on the Cross, even in the temptation. His flesh was weak and trembling. He was weak in the flesh, but He was strong in the power of the Spirit.
We must like our Lord enter into weakness and experience the power of the resurrection, and walk in newness of life.
3. It is not in the power of your flesh that you can put off sinful habits. As I have said before, that is nothing more than behavior modification that any Jew, Muslim, JW, or Mormon can accomplish just fine without any help from God. We must not rely on ANY fleshly methods. Anything outside of the power of Christ is forbidden. Your heart will only change by the power and presence of Christ. If your behavior changes without heart change, then you have fleshly behavior modification.
Paul hit this when he asks this question in Galatians 3:3, “having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect [HOLY, MATURE IN CHRIST] by the flesh?” In other words, how did your heart get changed and your salvation begin, by your own power or by the power of the Spirit? Paul said in Romans 7:18, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,)dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.”
Application: Are you trying to come to holiness through pride and self effort? Are you lazy spiritually and careless in your sins and then come to worship and think that you will be moved at all by the Holy Spirit? Do you try to worship the Lord without a renewed mind? Have you lived your life with dead religion instead of in the power of the Spirit of God? Have you begun in the Spirit? Was there a time in your life and you crossed the great divide where you forsook your idols and turned to the Living God?
B. This exercise also takes PRACTICE! 1 Timothy 4:7, “Exercise thyself …unto godliness.”
It takes practice. You are to practice taking up your cross and following Christ daily. That means to continue to say no to self and yes to Christ every day until one by one all the old sinful habits of the old man are replaced by new ones. It means that each day you will find it more “natural” and comfortable to live under the power of Christ’s mind than living under the counsel of the world.
Illustration: The word “exercise” in 1 Timothy 4:7, is the word we get “gymnastics” from. It is a term related to athletics. Have you seen the gymnasts in the Olympics? Do you think they jumped up to the bars to flip around for the first time on the day of their Gold Medal competition? No, they began long before that with such practice that they could get up on those bars and do that without thinking. It is second nature.
Illustration: No weight lifter says, “Here is a very heavy weight”. I’ve never lifted weights before, and that one over there looks like the heaviest one—“I’ll start with that one!”
It is your responsibility to exercise yourself unto discipline. God has purchased not only our salvation but also our sanctification. God promises that every one He calls will be justified and sanctified—conformed to His image. And though sanctification is guaranteed, the responsibility of sanctification is laid at the Christian’s feet.
Application: So HOW can I renew my mind? In other words, how can I have the Mind of Christ rule IN ME? How do I cleanse it from filth and fill it with His VERY PRESENCE?
I believe the formula for mind renewal, which is giving Christ total control over your mind is found in Mark 8:34. Jesus said: “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
1. First, Be Careful what you Feed on! Examine yourself and put off any barrier that would quench the Spirit of God. Are you feeding on anything that as a Christian you should be choking on? Is there anything you are participating in that is grieving the Spirit of God? We must examine ourselves and renew our mind again and again and again.
If you want to renew your minds, you must be careful what you are "feeding" your mind. There is an expression, "garbage in—garbage out." If we give our minds nasty things to think about, then our behavior is very likely to match those nasty kinds of thoughts sooner or later. But if we fill our minds with good things, then it becomes so very much easier to act in ways which makes God and us happy. Think about all of the different ways you spend your time. Are you filling your mind with good things or bad?
2. Second, Practice the Replacement Principle.
Cut off the counsel of the ungodly and cleanse your mind by the Word. Ephesians 5:25-27, “Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
In Psalm 1, the Blessed man does not “walk in the counsel of the ungodly… 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” And what happens to every believer who does this? Verse 3, “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
Like a filthy rag that goes through the wash, our minds are cleansed and renewed. The ugly glops of dirt and filth are cleansed. The anger that dirties our mind with rage and hatred and self-centeredness is lifted away by looking at the mangled Christ, bloodied on the Cross as a selfless, forgiving Lamb. How can we but forgive who have been forgiven? We have no right to anger. The lust that dirties our mind with unlawful pleasures is taken away and we are freed by pleasure in Christ! The pride that intoxicates our heart with haughtiness, arrogance and vanity is extinguished with a broken humility.
3. Finally, Let Scripture be your Guide. God desires to “sanctify and cleanse [YOU] with the washing of water by the word,” You want a renewed mind? Then soak your mind with Scripture.
Psalm 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Conclusion: I’m going to give you a very practical way to do this. The only way to get more faith and more power is by letting the Word of God soak into your heart. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).
